This is the foundational course of the
Davis Program. If your son or daughter is having difficulties at
school with reading, writing, spelling, understanding verbal
instructions (auditory processing disorders), then this is the
right program.
And if you, yourself, have noticed 10-15 traits which apply to
you from the
37 Characteristics of Dyslexia)
then this is the program for you.
PROGRAM CONTENTS
The Basic Tools
During the 5 day intensive program you will learn strategies to help you deal with confusion with symbols. You will
Learn how to recognize and control your mental state
When
you become confused about letters, words and numerals, you will
acrtually learn how to turn off that confusion. This is a very simple and easy mental technique
called Davis Orientation Counseling®. The trick is to find out
when you need to clear the fog (“orient” yourself) and to
practice it again and again until it becomes second nature to
you. You will learn how to come back and re-focus on what you
were doing before the confusion took place.
Master symbols and words - for reading comprehension
The procedure we use for this is Davis Symbol Mastery ®. It
means using clay to put abstract symbols and words into a full
3-dimensional model. Why? Because the dyslexic thinks in
pictures, and in full 3-D ones. So by creating abstract symbols
in 3-dimensional models, we are appealing to his natural
thinking style.
We begin with the alphabet and punctuation marks to clear up any
uncertainties you may have. We want you to be very, very secure
and sure of whatever you do. Then we tackle the trigger
words, which are the most frequent words you will find in every
text, in any language. These are words such as from,
with, the. These words make it difficult for any dyslexic to
read because no mental picture of the meaning of the word comes
easily to mind as they are reading along in their text.
So what would be more natural for a person with
multi-dimensional thinking that to create a 3-D model of the
meaning of the word (in clay), together with the letters that
spell that word. These images are then stored away in the
brain’s memory networks. In this way, one by one, words are
mastered. Learning words in this way is then permanent! Reading
improves.
Practice and applying these skills and strategies to
whatever your needs are
Once these foundation skills are in place, then you and I
together will define exactly what areas you want to address in
depth during the last day or two of the program.
