“Dyslexia is not a complexity, it is
a compound of simple factors, which can be dealt with
step-by-step.” Ronald D. Davis

The Gift of Dyslexia
Ronald D. Davis wrote The Gift of Dyslexia
in 1994 The book has traveled around the world, been translated into 17
languages. Thousands of people have listened to Ron’s works
and presentations on every continent. This little book changed the way
the world looks at dyslexia and how to treat it. Back then
one hardly would have made reference to the extraordinary
“talents”, the “giftedness”,
and the “genius” of the dyslexic. The
word meant “disability”,
“impairment”, “defect”,
“remediation”, and above all
“failure” and fear of exposure. Yet
nowadays, we read more and more about the gifted dyslexic, see her on
TV, hear him interviewed on the radio.
Trouble with words…and more
Simply put, dyslexia means “trouble
with words”. We include difficulties with reading,
writing, math, attention (ADD/ADHD), coordination, and sensory
processing in the definition. The symptoms of dyslexia vary from person
to person and from time of day to time of day. (See:

Characteristics of Dyslexia) But just about each and every
dyslexic will, on the other hand, have some particular area(s) in his
or her life in which he really excels!
From a disability to a gift
But what are these gifts? How can a gift cause a
disability?
Here is the key: those very strengths and those weaknesses that you
will find living side by side in the dyslexic stem from the same
source.
At the very root of dyslexia lies a gift – a certain way of
reacting to confusion (which we call disorientation) and a certain way
of thinking (mostly in pictures) and a certain way of perceiving the
world (multi-dimensionally). When these three characteristics all come
together, then you have in front of you a very intelligent human being!
-– someone who is extremely imaginative, always curious and
frequently highly intuitive. You also have a person in front of you who
is probably having difficulties with the 3 R’s,
maybe even labeled “learning disabled”, or worse
– “lazy”, “unruly”,
etc.
